Biodegradable and compostable materials are not the same thing

Environmental labels describe different processes and conditions, and a material that breaks down in an industrial composting facility may not do so in soil, water or a home compost pile.

Biodegradation depends on environment

Temperature, moisture, oxygen and microorganisms all matter.

Compostable is a more specific claim

Standards can specify breakdown and residue requirements under defined composting conditions.

Time scale matters

Almost any organic material can eventually change, but useful claims need realistic conditions and times.

Disposal systems matter

A material is only useful as 'compostable' if the local system can actually process it.
